High-quality Restorative Dentistry in Meridian, ID

It’s great news that the incidence of tooth decay has significantly diminished over the years due to the use of fluorides and an increase in patient awareness. However, teeth are still susceptible to decay, infection, and breakage and sometimes need to be restored back to health. Should your teeth ever require a restorative treatment, you can rest assured knowing we will always discuss with you the available options, and recommend what we believe to be the most comfortable and least invasive treatment. Providing you with excellent care is our number one priority when creating your beautiful smile.

All on 4 was developed as a way to best restore the full arches of the upper and lower jaws by implant manufacturer Nobel Biocare and European implant dentist Paulo Malo using biomechanics, computer simulation, and clinical research.

All on 4 Permanent Teeth in Just One Day!

All on 4 was developed as a way to best restore the full arches of the upper and lower jaws by implant manufacturer Nobel Biocare and European implant dentist Paulo Malo using biomechanics, computer simulation, and clinical research.

This technique provides our patients with a non-removable dental arch that is secured by as little as four dental implants – all on the same day. All on Four is the perfect option for patients who have or need dentures or need complete restorations on the upper or lower teeth.

Benefits of All on 4

  • This procedure uses only four implants to secure all teeth
  • High-quality full teeth restoration can be performed even when bone loss has occurred – bone grafting is not needed in most cases
  • Gives you teeth immediately – we make sure our patients leave our office smiling- with a brand new set of replacement teeth! (Previous treatments required patients to receive a total of six or more implants, with treatment extending throughout 18 months of treatment. The patients were then forced to leave the office without any teeth or a poor fitting temporary denture for over a year!)
  • The All on 4 procedure provides especially effective restoration of the upper jaw because longer and stronger implants can be secured in the back part of the jaw
  • Minimal Recovery Time
  • Reduces overall cost when compared to single implants

All on 4 Dental Implant Procedure

In order for us to properly evaluate your case, you will initially require a consultation and diagnostic appointment in order to best determine the treatment path necessary for your case. This includes determining whether or not your case will require extractions, gathering the appropriate information via X-rays, Panoramic scans and impressions and any other photos required.

Directly after this consultation, you will be scheduled for implant surgery in which the new replacement teeth are fitted and adjusted all in one appointment, including any necessary extractions.

  • Four titanium implants are placed in the jaw in such a way that the bone will envelop and secure them into place.
  • The implants that are placed in the back part of the jaw are angulated to achieve maximum advantage to the existing bone structure.
  • Once the four implants are secure, the abutments will be attached so that the replacement teeth can be fastened and adjusted for maximum comfort and function giving you a brand new radiant smile.
  • Because only four implants are used in the procedure, the entire process is much less invasive and involves less surgical time than previous treatments.

The beauty of this new procedure is the sheer convenience. Special implants were developed for this treatment allowing for the immediate fitting of replacement teeth to the abutments. This means that with only four implants, patients can leave our dental office with a full set of new replacement teeth within only one appointment! No bone grafts necessary!

The teeth are permanent and fixed so there is no need for patients to be without teeth or to endure temporary dentures for an extended time period. The patient is enabled to come for a morning appointment and leave that same afternoon with a brand new radiant smile!

Crowns

A crown is a fixed prosthetic that is cemented over your existing tooth. Many times extractions and removable dentures can be avoided with the use of a crown or a bridge, but there are many factors involved.  The dentist will go over all of your options at the free initial visit.

Bridges

A bridge is a prosthetic that is used to fill in gaps or spaces. They can help save and restore your smile. For more information on bridges please call us at 208-893-5435.

What would be some reasons you might chose to elect a crown or a bridge?

  • Instantly fill in gaps
  • Correct the color of teeth
  • Correct misaligned teeth
  • Keep smile looking healthy

You’ve lost teeth and have replaced them with dentures. Amazing, you can smile again without having to cover your mouth. But how’s your chewing ability? Are you dentures moving around despite the “goo” you use to keep them solidly in place? The solution is Denture Stabilization. A few implants will secure your dentures into place and you can now chew any food without worry!

The Benefits of Denture Stabilization

  • Over time, as you wear your denture, you lose the bony structure that supports your soft tissues.
  • Because your soft tissues actually make contact with your dentures, this too will start to recede with the bone.
  • This leaves you in a constant state of adjustment, discomfort, and difficulty with everyday functions like speaking, chewing and especially smiling.

Implant Supported Dentures:

  • Provide tremendous support and fixation so you can comfortably speak, chew, and smile.
  • Keep your upper and lower jaw bone from receding which prevents facial shape changes like the “shrunken” look.
  • Perfect option for patients with dentures who do not want to go through the expense required for individual tooth implants.

After having your implants placed, your dentures will be adjusted to attach to the implants.

Even patients with some bone loss can benefit from Implant Supported Dentures.

In one simple procedure, all the discomfort of dentures can be eliminated.

There is overwhelming evidence that stabilized dentures should be the first choice standard of care for denture wearers.

If you have a cavity, you’re not the only one. According to one survey, over 85% of Americans have had at least one tooth affected by decay by the age of 40. At Linder Road Family & Cosmetic Dentistry we give you the option of choosing a durable composite resin filling that more closely matches the color of your teeth or a silver amalgam filling to seal a cavity.

What is a Filling?

A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. When we give you a filling, we first remove the decayed tooth material, clean the affected area, and then fill the cleaned out cavity with a filling material.

By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay. Materials used for fillings include porcelain, a composite resin (tooth-colored fillings), and an amalgam (a metal alloy such as silver).

Filling Procedure

Before filling the cavity, we will first remove the decay and clean the affected area. The cleaned-out cavity will then be filled with one of the below mentioned materials.

Which Type of Filling is Best?

No one type of filling is best for everyone. What’s right for you will be determined by the extent of the repair, whether you have allergies to certain materials, where in your mouth the filling is needed, and the cost. Considerations for different materials include:

  • Amalgam (silver) fillings are resistant to wear and relatively inexpensive. However, due to their dark color, they are more noticeable than porcelain or composite restorations and are not usually used in very visible areas, such as front teeth.
  • Composite (plastic) resins are matched to be the same color as your teeth and therefore used where a natural appearance is desired. The ingredients are mixed and placed directly into the cavity, where they harden. Composites may not be the ideal material for large fillings as they may chip or wear over time. They can also become stained from coffee, tea or tobacco, and do not last as long as other types of fillings generally from three to 10 years.
  • Porcelain fillings are called inlays or onlays and are produced to order in a lab and then bonded to the tooth. They can be matched to the color of the tooth and resist staining. A porcelain restoration generally covers most of the tooth.

If decay or a fracture has damaged a large portion of the tooth, a crown, or cap, may be recommended. If you determine that you need a crown, check out this article that explains the benefits of same day crowns. Decay that has reached the nerve may be treated in two ways: through root canal therapy (in which nerve damaged nerve is removed) or through a procedure called pulp capping (which attempts to keep the nerve alive).

Who is a Candidate?

Candidates for full mouth rehabilitation include those who have problems with all or many of their teeth. Good candidates are also those individuals who are prepared for what can be a lengthy process, sometimes requiring multiple procedures over several months or even years.

Some of the problems that full mouth rehabilitation addresses include:

  • Missing teeth
  • Cracked, chipped, decayed or otherwise damaged teeth
  • Jaw or TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problems
  • Severely worn teeth due to grinding or a misaligned bite
  • Extensive erosion of tooth enamel
  • Issues resulting from traumatic injury

If you think you may be a good candidate for full mouth rehabilitation, the first step is to contact our Linder Road Family & Cosmetic Dentistry practice to schedule a consultation with Dr Kooyman.

Your Personalized Consultation

Don’t be embarrassed about the condition of your smile. With more than 12 years of experience as a dentist, there is little that Dr. Kooyman hasn’t seen. During your personalized full mouth rehabilitation consultation, he will perform a comprehensive examination of your mouth and speak with you about your goals. He will also explain what is involved in the process, making sure that you understand how much time it can take and how many procedures are involved to achieve the optimal outcome.

After the initial consultation and examination, Dr. Kooyman will prepare several treatment plans for you to choose from.

Full Mouth Rehabilitation Procedures

Full mouth rehabilitation may include any of the general, cosmetic, or restorative dentistry procedures offered at Linder Road Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. Some of the most common treatment options included in full mouth rehabilitation include:

  • Dental implants to replace missing teeth.
  • Porcelain veneers and/or crowns to conceal flaws and add strength to teeth.
  • Teeth cleaning and periodontal treatment to restore dental health.
  • Invisalign® orthodontics to correct gaps and misalignments.
  • Treatment for TMJ disorder to relieve discomfort and prevent tooth damage that can be caused by clenching and grinding.

Full mouth rehabilitation patients can also take advantage of the sedation dentistry options available at Linder Road Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, including oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide. Both sedation options will allow you to remain conscious during your procedures while helping you remain relaxed and comfortable.

Recovery from Full Mouth Rehabilitation

Recovery time will depend on your personalized treatment plan. Full mouth rehabilitation is often an ongoing process, requiring several procedures over the course of months or years to achieve optimal results. Although procedures can sometimes be combined, as they are with a smile makeover, doing so can have less than ideal results with full mouth rehabilitation. Since the procedures are often very complex and may involve the entire mouth, it is important to allow adequate healing time before proceeding to the next procedure. You may be anxious to have your smile restored as quickly as possible; however, Dr. Kooyman prefers to take extra time to make sure each procedure is done right and produces the desired results before moving on to the next step.

Schedule a Full Mouth Rehabilitation Consultation

If you have multiple dental issues affecting many or all of your teeth, you may be a good candidate for full mouth rehabilitation. Contact our practice in Linder Road Family & Cosmetic Dentistry today to schedule a consultation and learn more about how Dr. Kooyman and his team can restore health, function, and beauty to your smile. For more than 12 years, he has helped people throughout the area, including Boise, West Boise, and Eagle, restore their smiles through full mouth rehabilitation.

For people who are missing teeth, dental implants usually provide the best replacement solution. An implant is a post that is surgically placed in the jawbone to take the place of a natural tooth root and serves as a foundation for a replacement tooth. Dr. Kooyman has extensive experience in implant dentistry, and stays up to date with continuing education courses. He customizes each step of the implant dentistry treatment plan to fit a patient’s individual needs for the most successful outcome. If you would like to learn more about dental implants, contact Linder Road Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Meridian to schedule a consultation today.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Years ago the only options for replacing missing teeth were fixed dental bridges (which affect surrounding teeth) or removable dentures (which can slip out of place). Today, our patients have a more permanent solution in dental implants. Implants have many benefits over other tooth replacement options, including:

  • Appearance and Function: Implants, with attached restorations, look and feel just like natural teeth. In addition, they will not slip out of place like dentures or other removable restorative dentistry options can, giving you the confidence to speak and eat with freedom.
  • Dental Health: Since the jawbone fuses to the implant post, an implant helps prevent bone loss and gum recession by taking the place of a natural tooth root. Also, unlike bridges that require surrounding teeth for support, implant-supported restorations do not affect any other teeth.
  • Versatility: Implants can be used to replace a single tooth or several teeth. They can also be used to support a full denture if all of the natural teeth are missing.

Who is a Candidate?

In general, anyone who is missing one or more teeth and is in good oral and overall health makes a good candidate for dental implants. We would be happy to evaluate your oral health and discuss your candidacy. Of primary consideration is having sufficient healthy jawbone in the area to receive the implant. However, we can often perform a bone graft procedure prior to implant placement to build up the jawbone if needed. At Linder Road Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we also offer sedation dentistry to help our patients relax through their implant dentistry treatments, making even patients with dental phobia good candidates for the procedure.

The Implant Dentistry Procedure

The procedure to place dental implants is straightforward and can be completed in three visits to our practice after an initial consultation.

  • Implant Post Placement (First Visit): During the first visit, the titanium implant post, which resembles a small screw, will be placed into the jawbone through an oral surgery procedure. The jawbone is allowed to heal for several months to ensure that is fully fused with the post before the abutment is attached.
  • Abutment Attachment (Second Visit): During the second visit, an abutment will be attached to the post so that the restoration can be placed on it in the next visit. The area is allowed to heal for a few weeks before the restoration is attached.
  • Restoration Attachment (Third Visit): During the third and final visit, the restoration – a single dental crown, dental bridge, or denture – will be attached to the exposed portion of the abutment.

The Cost of Dental Implants

Dr. Kooyman takes great care to customize each implant dentistry treatment plan to fit the needs of the individual patient. Some people will require a bone graft, while others may require additional treatments for optimal results. For these reasons, it is impossible to give an accurate estimate for the cost of dental implants without visiting our practice for a thorough evaluation.

For your safety and comfort, we offer our patients Metal Free Dentistry.

Certain materials traditionally used in dentistry can lead to health problems, and it is for this reason that we offer our patients metal free dentistry, preserving the beauty of their teeth while repairing their bite.

Composite Fillings

When plaque and bacteria erode tooth enamel, they can form cavities and areas of decay in the tooth structure. Left unchecked, this can destroy the sensitive nerves and root structure of teeth. Our composite resin fillings are placed in order to stop cavities and restore the bite surface. During the procedure, the decay and only a minimal amount of the original tooth structure will be removed. Composite resin fillings appear natural and are virtually undetectable in your smile. Even if you have previously placed metal fillings, they can be removed and replaced with composite tooth-colored fillings that are beautiful and metal free.

Porcelain Crowns

Unlike metal-based crowns of the past, our all-ceramic crowns are crafted using layers of porcelain that not only protect the remaining tooth structure, but look more realistic than past restorations. In much the same way that porcelain dental veneers are crafted, the porcelain is layered to create the most realistic ceramic restoration. Because of this careful process, light is able to move through the semi-translucent material in much the same way as natural teeth. Porcelain is also extremely strong and durable and will last for years to come

Metal-based crowns have also been known to erode along the gumline, exposing a dark line of metal at the base of the tooth. We use only metal-free crowns in our restorative dentistry procedures. Our patients often report that friends and family can’t tell their crowns from their natural teeth, and that they are confident their bite is stronger because of the porcelain crowns.
